A neighborhood can change when one brave yes turns into many. That’s the heartbeat of this conversation as we spotlight local leaders who feed families, mentor girls into confident young women, bring step culture roaring back to San Antonio, and create real publishing opportunities for HBCU student artists.

We kick off with Ronald Gordon of WSAN Radio, a community voice rooted in service. When Monique asked for help, Ronald committed to feeding 25 families for Thanksgiving before a single dollar was raised—and watched $1,100 arrive through everyday generosity, with clear accountability and tax-deductible receipts. That effort links with an East Side daycare run by the Wiggins family, a small business doing big work: extended hours for working parents, resource drives for kids, blankets and shoes for neighbors without housing, and a gift-card push to support students home from college.

Then we met with Tonya Swain
founder of This Is 4 My Girlz, Inc.  a year-round mentorship program for ages eight to twenty-four. Her team is relighting the step tradition with the Rhythm of the Night Step Show at the Carver Joe Long Theater. It’s more than entertainment—it’s a cultural bridge to college life, featuring university Greek organizations, local performers, and a joyful stage where girls build voice, timing, and pride. With workshops in etiquette, safety, financial literacy, and creative production (yes, they once shut down a downtown street for a runway), Tanya’s program helps girls see themselves as leaders with options.

Rounding out the hour, Dr. Goshay invites HBCU students to submit artwork for a national contest. The winning piece becomes the cover of her new book on successful events, with credited copyright, a trophy, a cash award, and a free copy on release. It’s the kind of opportunity that turns talent into portfolio, and portfolio into paid work. She also teases future film projects and calls for actors, crew, and creators to stay connected.

If you believe in practical hope—full tables, full theaters, and full-circle opportunities—this is your kind of story. Subscribe, share with a friend who loves community wins, and leave a review telling us where you’ll jump in next. Your yes could be the spark someone’s waiting for.

SPEAKER_10:

Welcome, welcome, and welcome. I am so glad to see my faves again this week. So let me tell you, we have had so many things happening. But you know, it's my favorite time of the year other than the month of May. Those who know, you know, the month of May is my absolute favorite because that's the national, you know, holiday. Just kidding. It's actually my birthday. I celebrate the whole month, but you know, those who don't know that you learn now. Anywho, I have some amazing guests today. Today is actually all about people who are doing good in the hood. I know, I think I probably that's kind of like an 80s a little bit, telling my age. But we have some of the most amazing guests. Some of them are from San Antonio, and then we have some others that will be on um either another time or later on in this show that you know are doing some things other places that I have a close connection with as well. But today uh we have you know some old friends as well as some new faces. Now, I'm not gonna go into our announcements right now because I have several. We have a lot of things to talk about. So I'll probably do the announcements later. So stay tuned and watch because we have some great guests. Now, I did tell them I don't know what order because y'all know I don't have an engineer yet. I'm waiting on my college intern because with the lights going, so I don't know whoever I pick, that's it. So let's see, let's welcome to the show. Let's see who is first. Yay! I picked Mr. Ronald. Mr. Ronald, how are you?

SPEAKER_07:

I am doing good. Thank you for inviting me on the show.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome stuff. So, you know, tell us tell us who you are and you know what you what you do around, you know. The show is doing good in the hood, and you absolutely do that, you know.

SPEAKER_07:

Just saying, yeah, I'm Ronald Gordon, the owner of WSAN Radio, um, stationed here in San Antonio, Texas. It's been going for 11 years, and uh I believe in community. Um, when my mom passed away, she was always doing things in community, so I'm doing the same thing. I'm making sure that um the voice is heard. I was told that I was a voice of the voiceless. I didn't understand what they said at the time, but now I do understand because um without certain voices out there, people would never know what's going on. And speaking about that, is it okay for me to get into uh what I'm doing right now, Monique?

SPEAKER_10:

Well, um I have another guest on here that could possibly help you out with that. Okay, but um, so let's let's bring them on. I don't know. And it is funny because you two actually, you know, I kind of work with both of y'all outside, and it was just like it gelled, and it just made my heart smile to know that you know, my friends are your friends too. So let me bring them on for you, I thought they was coming, they disappeared. There they go. Welcome, welcome.

SPEAKER_02:

Hello, hello.

SPEAKER_10:

How are you two doing?

SPEAKER_02:

We are doing awesome.

SPEAKER_10:

Now, um, y'all have been up to some things since the last time I seen you. So tell us what you've been up to, lately.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh my gosh. Um, you know, we opened up a daycare in May, um, and it's just been growing. It's been a blessing. It's a blessing to be a blessing to this community. We are on um the east side um in the lower um community. Um, and it's just um we're we're we're getting some families who need certain resources, and we just love being able to give resources to these families right now. So we're we're doing a lot. We're we're doing a lot. We're a small little business, but we're doing big things.

SPEAKER_10:

I love it, I love it. She said they're small, but they're doing big things. Hey, they've never really been small in my eyes. They you know always been big and always have been a blessing, and that's why you know I was happy that you know Mr. Ryan was able to connect with y'all as well. So, what's what's this big announcement that that you both had?

SPEAKER_07:

Well, well, it started off with you, Monique. You gave me uh you dropped something in my ear, but I didn't think you didn't know that that uh me and Mr. Wiggins knew each other because we were at the first met. Oh wow, and Monique came, she sent me a mess, Ron. Uh, we need some help. I said, What do you need? She said, Well, we need to feed some families. Um, Mr. Wiggins, I said, Okay, I'll give him a call. So I called them and we started talking, and and before I knew it, for some reason, 25 came out came out my mouth, feeding 25 families for Thanksgiving. And then I looked at my wife and she looked at me, she said, What do you do? I said, I have no idea. But I think God uh put that in my head, and so I called Mr. Wiggins up. I said, Hey, this is what I want to do for you. And we started talking and going over some things, and I said, Okay, so we get all straight now. Now, Mark, we didn't have we had zero dollars, zero, and so I sat down and put the first bit of money in there. So when I started um talking to people about it, I went to bowling and tell the lady was doomed, she gave me a hundred dollar bill. I talked to somebody else, they gave me 250. It started rolling on, and so now I am proud to announce it. We are at eleven hundred dollars.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh my god, yes, money doing.

SPEAKER_07:

Oh and we need 1250 to feed 25 families, and we are gonna reach that by Sunday.

SPEAKER_01:

Amen.

SPEAKER_10:

I think y'all reach it by Friday. Yes, I'm happy that um people are, especially at such a time as this, um, with all the things going on and people being impacted. I'm glad that you know this connection was able to happen, and that's why I said y'all doing good in the hood.

SPEAKER_11:

I mean, yeah.

SPEAKER_10:

So I'm happy that uh you both are able to do stuff. I am, I think I said y'all have something coming up, but if people wanted to donate still, what is the link um that they would have to go to?

SPEAKER_07:

It's on my Cash App, my nonprofit Cash App is dollar sign at L S A. And that's where they could to um to contribute to. And once they contribute, make a donation, they get a receipt. So they can use it for tax purposes. So um that's what we're doing right now.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome. You said hey, that is important. Like I make sure I try to tell people that all the time. Anything you donate to ABC, whether you're purchasing a ticket, supporting anybody, um, it is a hundred percent a tax um deductible donation. So I'm happy now. I I think they just getting double blessed because we also have an event with um the daycare in the Wiggins family, because I just love them so much. They like the siblings I always wanted, but you know, sometimes we we linked up and I always see them and it just be like, you know, family all over again. But um, we are doing an event at the Wonder Chamber um to sponsor their daycare. But we also added an extra component because if your scholar participated in um one of the send-offs, now we're not gonna give you a million bucks, but we might give you something to buy your lunch or something. Um, we are collecting that type of donations for our college kids because they probably come home and they like already don't want to follow mama's rules. They come home, they come home and they reality set in. I'm not on campus no more. So, you know, just a little token to tell them, look, you know, I understand your pain, but we're doing that for them also. So thank you guys both for stopping by. Um, is there anything that you both want to say um before you uh before you go or something you want to talk about your business or tell people how they can connect with your businesses?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Well, um, I would like to say that um we are um La Kyan Little Hands Academy. We're located um off of Fortan in Brixby, um, right between, I always tell people we're right between Whataburger and Sonic. And um we're open from 6:30 a.m. Um to 6 30 p.m. to accommodate parents who need that time frame um for work. Um we are have an event on the 21st, please come out where that's when we're gonna um be able to bless these families with these, um, with the blessing that we've been blessed with um to support them in the time of um in the need. And we have a lot of families that were impact um by the by the shutdown. Um, so this is such a blessing. Um so thank you um uh uh for definitely uh reaching out and doing that for us, um Brother Ronnie. And um, and so we um uh what else we got? Um we're gonna do we we're we're having um some clothing for children that we're collecting. Um we're trying to do some blankets, some some shoes, you know. Um we have a lot of homeless in this area, and so um I try to feed them as much as possible um with my work schedule. And so we we're we're we're gonna feed them on that day. We're gonna um have the families come out and be able to give them um those uh gift cards. And this is a blessing. We're really excited, but it's the 21st between 4:30 um and 6 p.m. So what you got?

SPEAKER_01:

Uh well the only other thing I have is uh it's just truly amazing to have pillars within the community. I mean Ronnie is definitely one. Um, and how to deal with you, uh Dr. Monique is another, and just bringing individuals together, and what this also shows is how to deal with the collaboration within our community and how big of a voice that can be. So we want to continue to do these things here uh so we can be a pillar within the community and be able to put on not only these events but so many more events to come.

SPEAKER_07:

Amen. Yeah, and I just like to add that um um it's Monique's fault because for some unknown reason she put us at the same table, and that's how we met.

SPEAKER_11:

Yes, yes, yes, that's exactly right.

SPEAKER_07:

And we met that way, but um, but but for me, um I'm Ronald Gordon with WSAN Radio. I'm here for the community, I do things for the community. There's a lot of people come up and ask me, Um, well, we need some music, but we don't have much money. I said, What you got? Okay, I can I could work with that because I'm not really out there. It sounds crazy on getting ready to say, I'm not really out there for the money, I'm out there to make sure the voices are getting heard, everything else is going on. Now, bar me, I like money, don't get me wrong, but if it's out there doing a good cause, I'm right there for it. And um, with your daycare center that y'all doing, and um uh when we first met, it was like an instant chemistry there. And I said, Somewhere along the line, we're gonna work, Lord. Behold, I think I think it's gonna be like this, yeah, so quick, but our God moving mysterious ways, and so I I am blessed to be part of this. I'm blessed to be Monique, and I tell you what, let's continue this. Let's after this is over with, let's talk about next year and get it started.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes, sir. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_10:

Well, thank you guys. I know um y'all have an extremely busy, busy schedule, but thank you for stopping by. Anything I can do on my end, y'all know I will connect you with somebody that can help, even if I don't have the answers. Yeah, but um, I'm I'm all in and supporting. I've been sharing it, and you know, after Thanksgiving, they got Christmas with us. And for the record, the wonder chamber is a picture, it's a selfie museum. It is not what people think, so just have to tell that. Yeah, so have a good one, and I can't wait to see you guys. I will be there at the event if I'm not out of town on the 21st. Like if air traffic control goes back to work, I won't be there because then I'll trust the planes a little bit. But otherwise, better work for the holidays because I can't get home.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, I understand that.

SPEAKER_10:

All right.

SPEAKER_00:

SPEAKER_10:

Welcome back. See, I am sitting here with a whole new guest. I told y'all I got people doing good in the hood today. Y'all thought I was playing. So I have a beautiful person with me today. Now it's funny because y'all know I meet people, and you know, I might not keep your card, but I keep your face, and then I, you know, I follow people on Facebook because it was like right then and there, like, look, follow me. I follow you, so follow me. So I followed her, and she got this amazing event coming up, but I don't want to spill the beans totally, but I'm gonna let her tell you about it and also tell us, you know, who you are and what you do.

SPEAKER_09:

Hey, hey, hey, y'all. My name is Tanya Swain. I am the founder of This Is For My Girls Incorporated. We are a year-round youth mentorship program, and this Sunday coming up, we are kicking off our inaugural step show event. We are trying to revive the step culture back in the city of San Antonio. So we are proud to carry that torch and relight the um, you know, the cultural arts of the step because it's pretty much obsolete now these days in in the area. So we want to make sure that we're bringing that back. But we are also utilizing this platform to kind of bridge and introduce our youth to uh college lifestyle, college exposure. So we are truly excited about Sunday's event, and we have so much planned for the upcoming year. Um, again, we are a year-round program for youth girls ages eight all the way up until 24.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome. So if you were watching, like, you know, while she was talking, I was kind of like putting up her flyer, like the step show is gonna be kind of good. Now, look, I grew up in that culture, I remember vividly living in Florida. I don't know, I'll get around. But um, Florida, they used to have these like step competitions with the high schools, like every high school, it seemed like in Florida had a step team. Now, me and my silly self, you know, Adia James, shout out to you if you are watching. We call ourselves, you know, we wanted to do an extra curricular activity. So we decided we was gonna have a step team. Now, mind you, you know, I I hate to put this school out there. The school we had was multicultural. So we show up at this step contest. Hilarious, but you know, we didn't place, but they remembered our name because you know, the the child is steps, she she was not of our ethnic background, but she showed enough left a mark that day. They was like, Look, you know, so so yes, I'm excited. I would definitely be there now. Um, you were telling me about your youth group, your youth, your mentor program. Now, uh, when we did talk offline, you did tell me you have an interest meeting, and I think I had the flyer. I might, yeah. So tell us about this.

SPEAKER_09:

Tell us about this, so right now we are in open enrollment season for 2026. This Saturday, we have a public interest meeting for those that want more information on our organization if you are interested in um enrolling your daughter into our group. Again, we are a year-round program, so we offer um workshops on etiquette training, safety awareness, um, financial literacy. We do also host different community events throughout the year, but we try to kind of be a little bit innovative and make sure that we are creating a platform where our girls can still enjoy themselves as they're learning to help them flourish into um young leaders. So, one of our signature events is called the Passion for Fashion Show, where um we actually host this year, earlier this year, we shut down a whole street of um downtown and we hosted a runway in the middle of the street under the highway for the girls to kind of strut, help build their confidence, but also expose them to different parts of production. So we want to make sure that we are implementing different factors of um what their future could look like if they choose to go the higher education route or entrepreneurship. We're giving them space to pretty much flourish and form into their authentic selves.

SPEAKER_10:

I love it, I love it. Thank you, and thank you for sharing that part. I know I kind of like pushed that out there. You was like, that's not what we're here for, but thank you. Now, this this step show. Um, let me let me pull that flyer up. Let me see. All right, now tell us about this because you you kind of like brushed over it. I was like, This is a big deal.

SPEAKER_09:

Yes, so we one of the programs we recently added to our mentorship program is uh a step team. So our step team is called Rhythm and Girls, it's kind of like a play on um rhythm and blues, classic RNG, is what you may hear them say, but um, yes, they are very excited. We have, I believe, 13 girls on the STEP team that are very excited to perform this coming Sunday. Um, and I will say that they are new to this form of dance, I guess you can say. So it's kind of excited to see how how much they've grown grown over the summer as they have been practicing for this this debut. Um, but again, we wanted to make sure that we added something where they could operate in a team-building atmosphere, it you know helps them build their confidence because now you know they're on the they're in the spotlight and they have to really show out, bring that energy. And we always tell them this is your space to just give it your all. So we have some that are timid. Um, we have some that you know, they're like, I've never done that before, but they feel comfortable using this platform to try something new. So I um really applaud them for their efforts. They are trying really, really hard to learn something new and they're enjoying it as they're they're growing. So I'm excited for them. Um, another thing that we we try to incorporate with the STEP team because we are um planning college tours, this kind of gives them a gateway or it's a bridge for them to stay connected with college lifestyle and student organizations on campus. So we use the STEP program as an introduction to expose them to what that could be like if they choose to go that route.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome. Well, I like that. Well, if you ever know, um need help with the HBCU component as you are introducing your young people, please let me know. Um, we we definitely, you know, I know people say, why you only deal with HBCUs? Well, you know, that's that's our reach, that's our motto, that's who we deal with. Um and also we also teach them the correct, you know. Some people think HBCUs are just for African Americans. No, we only exist because we couldn't go nowhere else. So we also teach that that component as well. But thank you so much for stopping by. I will be there Sunday. Um, I don't know exactly the the logistical things or what time everything starts. Can you tell us what time it starts? And if we don't have a ticket, how can we get that um that as well?

SPEAKER_09:

Of course. So the step show will be on Sunday, November 16th. It's going to be held at the Carver Joe Long Theater. The event starts at five. So you can purchase tickets online at Ticketmaster. I know the tickets are$15, but Ticketmaster has its own set of fees, so I'm not sure how much extra that comes out to. But if you go directly to the Carver, you can purchase your tickets cheaper. They only have a$2 um service fee. So you can get your tickets directly at the Carver or you can purchase them online. The name of the event is Rhythm of the Night Step Show. So that's how you can find it. Um, if you do plan on showing up, we definitely look forward to seeing you. We want to fill up this room and support these girls. We do have other performers that will be on the show as well, and it will be hosted by comedian Clifton, comedian Clifton Simmons. So he will be our host for the night. Um, but we have the Sigma Gamma Rose from Texas State that will be performing, also the San Antonio um chapter, uh Deltas, they'll be performing. We have the Lady Ducks hip hop team that will be performing as well, and a few other um special guest performers. So we want to make sure that you know everybody is packing out the room. We are again reigniting the torch for Step in San Antonio, and we would definitely love to see y'all show up for us. Thank you.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thank you for coming on and you know, telling us about the program, telling us what to expect Sunday. I will be there, I'll be there, probably in my my HBCU stuff. Y'all know that's how I roll. I had to look to make sure. Nope, I don't have on my HBU, I got Africa today. I don't have on my HBCU Erie, but I got you Sunday, but I will be there. Thank you so much for coming on. Anything you need from us here at ABC, please let me know. We got you.

SPEAKER_09:

SPEAKER_10:

Welcome back. Yes, see, look, I told you I had like 50 guests in the back. Y'all thought I was lying, see? So welcome, welcome back. And I have, you know, one of our newest board members with us today. Um, Dr. Gaucher, welcome to the show. How are you? Oh, awesome, awesome. Glad to be here. Now, look, um, she's like a hidden gem. So I'm gonna let her introduce herself to you, and she's gonna tell us what she has going on. And um, I know, but I want her to tell you.

SPEAKER_08:

Awesome. So I'm Dr. Gaucher with Dr. Gaucher's novels and curriculums and my company. Um, I've written uh a few books out here, a few curriculums. I've written a short film called Dystopia. You can see a couple of the books in the background there um that have been published. Um also served on educational panels, conducted educational workshops, presenter for educational seminars and more. Um the company believes in making a difference on impact. So we originated out of Peyton, Colorado in 2021, but the company currently operates in San Antonio, Texas. So, but I am a native of New York City. So what are we doing? Right now, I'm in the process of writing a new book, and the theme of this book is on creating successful events, and so what we're doing is a national contest, uh, which right now we're looking for students that are current HBCU students, and that contest is running from September the 15th to December the 15th of 2025. So we're hoping to make sure that we get uh clean enough uh contestants, but if not, we will open it up in December. So all you other artists, make sure you get your stuff out there. Um, and I just want to cover, um, just so you know, the prizes, we have a total of five prizes that we're given out. Uh, one of them uh is that I'm super excited about, as you can see on the cover of my books here. Uh, that particular student that gets selected, their artwork will be on the front cover of my book. Uh, also, they will get uh they will also um get the copyright to say that the artwork was illustrated through them. Uh, they'll also get a trophy. They will get$150 cash money to use the word copyright. College expenses to the entire reuse, so changes for college. And last but not least, once the book is complete and published, they will get a free copy of the book.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome. I was trying to like, you know, measure and beat you to the punch and kind of like show it. So look, I'm gonna show it again. I hope I hit the right slider because y'all know my weakness. So let's see. I had it up. Did I hit the right button? All right, yeah. So this is the um the book that Dr. Gaucher is having the art contest on. So now I can draw a mean stick figure, Dr. Gaucher. I don't know if you let me do that, but a mean stick figure. If they don't want that 150, you know, definitely I gladly accept it. I don't know, your cover is gonna be a stick figure though.

SPEAKER_08:

So oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Well that that's one of the things that that is not my strong point. Drawing is not my strong point. Um, so we you know, we want to leave it out to the more gifted folks. And my my gift is writing. I try.

SPEAKER_10:

I understand. I feel I I share your pain. So I I do not like I cannot draw. I'm not gifted in that, but those who are, make sure you reach out now. How what is that um information again where they can contact you if they uh want to enter? What's that telephone number or email or uh what's the best option to contact?

SPEAKER_08:

So if they they want me to send them the uh packet, uh there's a few ways they can get a hold of me. One, you can call me by phone um directly, and that number is 726-225-2623. Again, that number is 726-225-2623. Or you can email me, which uh is in the packet, but it's drg and it's N-A-C at the number 21 at gmail.com. Or you can follow me on Facebook at Dr. Gosher Novels and Curriculums, and that's spelled out for the and for Dr. Gaucher's novels and curriculums. Um but yeah, though those are the best ways to catch me on on either one of those.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome, and I am truly, truly excited. And I was like, wait a minute, I'm recording good in the hood today. So um I had to had to had to get you on here. Thank you for your time and you know, be safe, you know, as you as you go about your travels, but definitely guys, you you're missing out. My art majors, and I know some of you, you know, I know don't have me call you out, but um definitely reach out to Dr. Gaucher, you know, earn that quick 150. Holidays is coming up, like it's a good thing.

SPEAKER_08:

Yeah, yes. I'm I'm looking forward to to awarding it. I'm looking forward to seeing the artwork. I think we have some very, very talented um people out in the community, and especially for our HBCU students. So I wanted to definitely offer that opportunity to them first.

SPEAKER_10:

Awesome, awesome. Is there anything else before I let you go that you may want to share with our listening audience and viewing audience as well?

SPEAKER_08:

Well, after this book is finished, so that the quicker I get the contest done, the quicker we get the book done. I also have a another film, because I told you I already have the one film out called Dystopia, but I do have another film um that I am in the process of writing. So uh I want to finish one project before I finish the other. So I'll be looking for some actors and actresses and production crew.
