What Happens When Representation Becomes The Program
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You can feel it when a city decides to stop “talking about” Black excellence and actually programs it. We’re counting down to HBCU weekend in San Antonio, and we’re doing things differently this year with a real run-of-show that centers culture, family, and students not just a room full of tables. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to make an HBCU celebration feel meaningful, organized, and alive, this conversation gives you the behind-the-scenes.
We’re joined by powerhouse performer and creative leader Devon Matthews, who breaks down her work as founder and artistic director of Art Noir Productions, an all-Black performing arts organization built to fix a representation gap across dance, theater, spoken word, and more. She shares why training and stage opportunities matter, how young people grow when the standard is high, and why she’s bringing a tribute that honors Black culture and HBCU pride. We also welcome Anthony Harris Brown back as we talk program upgrades, why youth performers belong on an education-centered weekend, and how quickly people underestimate Black kids until the talent hits the mic.
Then the energy shifts to pure community fun with Rod Eckles and the fashion talk, plus a reminder that tickets are moving and the door price jumps if you wait. We also shout out honorees and resources that support college-bound students, including tools like the Common Black College App and HBCU trivia that keeps the history close.
Listen, share this with someone coming to the weekend, and then subscribe and leave a review so more people find the show. What part of an HBCU weekend matters most to you: the awards, the performances, the networking, or the student spotlight?
Cold Open And Welcome
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah. Step up, lean big dreams on the screen again from the block to the bed to the big stage plan. We talk wet talk when talk just again. Welcome to a bed, test TV, stick it to the free, I'll just be too checking the fixed on her feet. Oh pick in the chair, oh cool on peace, like right on the next big day, now we got the old night, out of the two door, swing wide from the late night, spread it to the entrepreneurs, all of fans, oh being every story here, start with your better test TV. Stick into the future on your screen.
HBCU Weekend Preview
SPEAKER_04Welcome, welcome, welcome, guys.
Monique RobinsonIn a couple days, it will be our annual HBC weekend here in San Antonio. So um I told y'all yesterday I have a huge surprise. This year we are doing things totally different. So if you have been in the past, this year we you know we have some things up our sleeve. But before I go into that, we got some guests in the back, and uh one of our guests will actually be here tomorrow, like here in San Antonio. So let's welcome to the show. Y'all know I can't see these buttons, so pray I push the right one. Uh-oh. I think he disappeared on us. Well, anywho, well, we did have Anthony Brown, who will be here tomorrow. Um and he kind of like left us. But I have our guest that will be performing at the HBCU all-star um event, HBCU icon event. And I'm gonna bring them both at the same time because you know the Spurs are kind of like playing, and I think they want to watch the game. I'm not a Spurs fan, but I live here, so I support. But anywho, that's welcome to the show. Miss, I'm gonna say her name wrong. I'm just gonna call her Dev Soul because for a long time I thought that was a real name. There you go. Girl pushing buttons and they ain't even working today. Is it crazy? How are you? I'm doing well. How are you, Monique? I don't know what happened. I was talking and I thought Anthony was still here and he done dipped out on us. Like, how you doing?
SPEAKER_12Yeah, they were talking all that trash before we before we came on. So yeah, that's look, now they were tickling me. I'm still very tickled, obviously, because that was hilarious.
Monique RobinsonLike, I can't even like how you just go uh I'm about to text him right now. Like, dude, you left us.
SPEAKER_12Left us, left us, and I introduce, I'm texting to him.
Monique RobinsonI introduce you too, but anywho, welcome to the show. We've been trying to get you on here for a long time.
SPEAKER_12I know, I've been so busy, but I'm here, and I'm happy to be here and to support this initiative. Like, I'm I'm super, super excited.
Monique RobinsonMe too, and I you know, I didn't introduce you because I always mess your name up. Sometimes I say Devin, sometimes I say Devon, and I'm like, I ain't gonna even mess it up. But guys, this woman is like, you know, y'all know it's hard for me to give give people compliments, you especially in the music area. You you gotta like really bring it, and those who know me personally know I don't just sing with anybody, but she invited me to sing with her. I had so much fun, guys, and you know, she's gonna be performing at the HBCU icon community people's choice awards, and uh she also got some surprises that's gonna be performing with her, but just tell us about yourself, you know, tell us what you do, you know, and things like that, and you know, just just give us a spiel, of course.
Devin Matthews And Art Noir
SPEAKER_12Welcome everybody. My name is Devin Matthews, that's Devin like Kevin with a D like David, and no, I'm not a boy. Um, my mother named me Devin after a character on All My Children back in the day. So that's where my name comes from. It's just Devin, five letters to syllables, Matthews with one T. Uh yeah, born and raised right here in San Antonio, Texas, proud product of the east side of San Antonio. I'm a professional performing artist, um, singer, dancer, actor, all the things, slam poet. What I've I pretty much have done every facet of performing arts. I am so honored and excited to present what we do here in San Antonio for the HBCU icon awards and people, iconic and people's choice awards. Um, I am also the founder and artistic director of Art Noir Productions. We are an all-black performing arts organization, 501c3. We are black ballerinas, black clowns. We have a black circus show, black tumblers, black everything, every genre, um two to 102. Anyone that identifies as black um can perform and be trained to perform with us um free of charge here in the city of San Antonio. Um and I founded this organization because of lack of representation. Um, we have uh here in the community, we have a couple of businesses who support us, and we have uh many of the parents' support. Um, but big shout out to my husband, Pastor James Matthews, um, and those diligent around us who help me get these kids and young adults and adults prepared to perform and do different things. So I'm so excited to present what we are gonna do in honor of our culture and in honor of the awards for this year. Um, I'm also the founder of Dev Soul Band. Um, Dev Soul is not performing before everybody's already asking me and thinking, expecting a set. My band is not performing. I have more than one band. Um, Dev Soul will be 20 years old this year. We are your ultimate live band experience, RB, Soul Jazz, Neo Soul. Um, and we have played and performed all over this city, and we have opened for Jagged Edge, for Chico DeBarge, Duelet, Um, Eric Roberson, next, uh Rose Royce. I've played with um on the jazz spectrum with Kyle Turner, um, our own Billy Ray Shepherd, Marion Meadows, um, and R I P to the one and only Michael Ward, the violinist who is from San Jazz Violinist from San Antonio. Um, uh gospel. I'm a worship leader. I am the proud member now of Greater Second Baptist Church in Segin, Texas, um, by way of Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church here, Pastor LJ Gillespie Sr. And I grew up in my home church, uh, which was founded by my great-grandfather, the late Reverend Rufus Wilson at Mount Sinai Baptist Church. So I'm a church baby, a church kid. I love, love, love Jesus, um, which led my love for Jesus and music led me to start the Revelations Gospel Project, which is another community endeavor that Miss Monique is a part of. Ha ha ha, you know what I'm saying? That's my girl. It's so funny. Like I thought you were a stand-up comic, but like really that's your personality, and this is mine. So um I just look forward to to working um with you on this event and to meeting all of the amazing people and showing that we have some real talent in San Antonio, that we have chops, and that although we are a predominantly um Hispanic uh city, that we do have representation for the culture. And y'all are gonna see that in a big, big way this Saturday. So if you have not gotten your tickets, do me a favor and go ahead and grab them because it's almost sold out. And then I mean, I can't I can't put you on a list. Do not call me or text me or message me. I can't help you. I can't, I can't, not on this one, unless you want to perform with me. So if you want to come perform with me, that's basically that's the only reason you need to call me. That's the only reason you need to call me is if you're going to come to work. You want to come to work, you get to a costume and come on. Uh other than that, I can't. I can't. My line, all lines are disconnected um on that day. Because you you know how it is, Moni.
Monique RobinsonHey, it's like that. And we have people now that are like, hey, how I get a room? I'm like, look, you better call the hotel directly because I don't know right now. But we gotta take a quick, quick, quick commercial break. And I got a couple questions. I'm gonna pick your brain since you won't put me on the land. Pick your brain right after this. Right, we'll be back.

Anthony Returns And Program Overhaul
Monique RobinsonYes, uh, if you watch a commercial and you paid attention, that is Mr. I'm sorry, he's Dr. Dr. Deacon. He's got like a thousand titles. But uh the most important title is this is my brother from another mother. Like he uh took me under his wings and I, you know, he usually be like, cut it out, cut it out. But a lot of things that I do is under his um direction, training, um, the the rough patches, but I'm about to bring him back. I guess he got our message like dude, you just left. I introduce you. So welcome back, Mr. He usually got theme music. I don't know if he got it.
SPEAKER_08Not today, no theme music today because I'm it's it's all packed up. It's it's it's already packed in the suitcase on my way to San Antonio.
Monique RobinsonYeah, Mr. Anthony will be in the building. This is our fifth year.
SPEAKER_08Has it been?
Monique RobinsonOh my god. Let me think. The first year I had the outfits.
SPEAKER_08It's been a couple years. I'm excited about being here. Listen, we need to help me wrap this up because I gotta get the bags if I'm gonna make the six o'clock flight.
Monique RobinsonOh, yeah, you gave it to your flight when I playing with you. So uh we welcome back.
SPEAKER_08Listen. See, the thing is, I'm gonna go back real quick. I why do I take the first flight in the morning? Because that plane is already here, it's already in the city of where you're departing from because it had to land last night. So it's not gonna be late. The crew is here, they slept overnight.
SPEAKER_12I love that.
SPEAKER_08Don't nobody it's the first one. The first one is always gonna be on time.
SPEAKER_12I love me a red eye. I'll get on one in a minute.
SPEAKER_08But anyway, listen, Devin, listen. You say don't call me right now. We ain't let's unless you call me about a gig, we ain't got time. Pretty much. What you said was money talks. Now I'm gonna leave it at that. What you said was money talks.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's a word right there.
SPEAKER_08I'm gonna let you rep, I'm gonna let your husband think on that lady. That's a word.
Monique RobinsonSo, but Anthony, this year we got like things different. So we're gonna start the program. You know, we got like a choir, they're gonna do uh we got choir coming, a little ensemble. I say ensemble, ensemble. We got some kids performing this year. I know.
SPEAKER_08Okay, I'm excited. I've been wanting students, listen, I always told, I mean, Rob Monique, from the first time we start playing it, like kids on program is gonna bring parents, parents are gonna buy tickets, but more importantly, we're talking about education, and and if we're highlighting the importance of HBCU in education, why not have young people on program?
SPEAKER_12Right. And I don't want people to get it get it twisted. You know, I have remember when I was in high school in the the San Antonio Youth Ensemble was a choir that I was a part of here, community gospel choir. We went all over the country, and you know, every year for you know, downtown San Antonio, we had the Christmas tree lighting, it's a big, big deal on the river and all this, you know, downtown San
Why Youth Performers Matter
SPEAKER_12Antonio. And our choir, I remember we ministered down there for the Christmas tree lighting. And I'll never forget that a news station here, I won't call them out. A news station referred to us as at-risk youth.
Monique RobinsonOh wow.
SPEAKER_12And I went, I remember I was a junior in high school, and I went out, I told my mother, I said, why are we referred to as at-risk youth? Uh I understood what that meant, but we were not that because we were black. We were overachievers. We were straight a student. Um, many of us, um, like for example, me, I won the science fair every year while I was in school. Um, I won every bike rodeo. I like I was learning two and three languages. I I didn't understand why, but I knew why. And so my mom said, Does this really bother you? I said, Yes, I'm offended. She called the news station on behalf of me and said that my teenage daughter, my teenage daughter sang with the choir last night. Y'all referred to them as at risk. What are they at risk of? That's what I she asked me what I wanted to know. So just because you see black skin, you assume, and because we're from the inner city that we have major problems, major life problems that we are in the system or have been in the system, or just because you see a choir of black children are performing, black children performing. So I just want to be very clear that everyone that's coming um to the uh to the gala and to the awards this weekend, um, and it's our mostly our people, right? So I know they're not gonna have that thought process, but I can pull any one of the talents to the side at any given moment and tell them to perform in in their capacity and they will blow your mind. Every last one of them. Every child, teen, and adult will blow your mind. You guys are we we're pulling the cream of the crop for everyone coming into our wonderful city and showing you what we can do. It's it's definitely not gonna be uh we are not the poster child for performances just because we are have this melanated skin. No, we are operating in black excellence. I accept I expect nothing less, and they they know that. So we're gonna give you guys a wonderful, wonderful show. We're gonna praise the Lord. It's gonna be a wonderful night, and I just cannot wait to meet and see everyone. So support my girl, support this endeavor, support this these doctors. I need to go, I need to buy because I want to be doctor too. I want to be, I want to be a doctor. I want to be Dr. Matthews.
Monique RobinsonGo for it, get in MC because you or theater, do something because you're back, the girl basically. Now, Anthony, this is the one that got me out to sing because you know I don't be singing like that no more.
SPEAKER_08Oh, this is the one who had you in the MLK choir.
Monique RobinsonNo, not that one. Yeah, that was MLK, wasn't it? What was it? No, the what event we sung for. What do we sing for? Oh shoot, we sang for the mayor thing.
SPEAKER_08Oh, okay.
Monique RobinsonYou see, you get me in trouble on live. See how you do, but no, I don't sing with that one. I sang with her, um, and it was really fun.
SPEAKER_12Revelation's gospel project. We we sang for the mayor's, the mayor's dream ball, um, which is a part of Dream Week San Antonio, which is the largest community-driven, um, giving community-supported function or event in the country. It is the largest, absolute largest. Um, you have three weeks.
Monique RobinsonThe time was head that day, though.
SPEAKER_12The time was head, three weeks and hundreds of events and programming um all across San Antonio for those entire 21 days. It's amazing.
Monique RobinsonRight. But this year we have, so we starting off, you know, I just want you to visualize this, Anthony, because we never done this. We start off with the choir, the, you know, the the traditional, you know, worship side, and and showing that you know, you can have all phases and touch our lives and still have a good time.
SPEAKER_08And Dad, by the way, real quick, so you know, this is our birthday party.
Monique RobinsonIt is. She told me I'm man.
SPEAKER_08Okay. This is this is the this is the close of our birth month celebration.
SPEAKER_12Oh, well, I thought he was a Gemini. Okay.
SPEAKER_08No.
Monique RobinsonMay second.
SPEAKER_12His birthday May 2nd.
SPEAKER_08We'll share some love with the Geminis, but yeah, my birthday's in two weeks.
SPEAKER_12So I'm just like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_08Then you lost me. So it's our first month. So this is this to the week after you make sure we go out with a bang.
Monique RobinsonSorry. I mean, your husband's birthday is in May, I think.
SPEAKER_08He's April's. All right, so people singing, they're gonna lift us up. They're gonna they're gonna they're gonna take us up and take us in.
Monique RobinsonYeah, she's gonna start shouting and stuff, and then you know.
SPEAKER_12Well, the young is it's gonna be it's gonna be um how old are you? It's gonna be Monique's age group singing and stuff. My my babies are gonna dance and um and do a tribute to pay homage to black culture and hbcu culture and all of that through dance. So you're gonna, I don't wanna spoil it. I can't, I don't want to spoil it.
Monique RobinsonShe won't tell me. I tried to ask, she won't tell me you're not gonna spoil it.
SPEAKER_08Don't tell me to let people know again is listen, you still got time. We got a little bit of room. Um, there's a few more tickets left for the HBCU icon and people's choice award. Um, you see the QR code here on the flyer, but we can make sure we put this uh link also in the description. So if you're still catching us before uh the end of the weekend, you can still try to see if you can get in.
Monique RobinsonYeah, I mean, because at the door is gonna be a hundred bucks, and once we meet capacity, we will not do like last year. Right last year, y'all was standing. No, we're not doing that. No, you don't get your ticket, you paying a hundred dollars until the seats run out, right? Wow, we're not doing that. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_08So I love the sellout, but but we had a great time last year, but we looking for a better time this year.
Flea Market Fashion And Fun
Monique RobinsonThat part, and then we're gonna end now. This this is funny, Deb. How we met this guy is I was a you know Eisenhower flea market, right? Okay, I took Anthony there because he came in town, and Anthony is wanted to shop till you drop. If you go shopping with him, just forget it, just get you a chair and sit down.
SPEAKER_08Somebody like, oh, I mean, oh, this is cute. I look, I was struggling the whole entire flea market. I didn't pack like I'm gonna be there for three weeks. I'm telling you now. I I love it every minute and no telling what else I'm going to buy when I get there. We don't need to get together because I have I have somebody I need him to meet because I struggle with you, never know, the weather, the mood, the the feeling, the vibe.
SPEAKER_12Great. If you need a if you need a bag or a backpack or a belt or something like that, I got somebody that can get it for you off the boat.
SPEAKER_08Oh Lord, I love a good belt. No, no, and a good little backpack. A little because just a fool with y'all too. I ain't got time. Come on, come on, come on, come on. Anyway, so we met this guy at the time.
Monique RobinsonI was buying a shirt. Next thing I know, he in there modeling and taking pictures like he lived in San Antonio.
SPEAKER_08I love it. I love it. Oh, baby, we ripped the runway last year. Listen, we would listen, we had so much fun at this particular clothing store. There was a customer came into the store, saw what I was wearing, and said, We want to buy that. That means that is what's up. Again, it wasn't the outfit that was on the rack. They said, No, no. We want one that he's wearing right now.
Monique RobinsonNow, mind you, I love it. We went to the mall, rolling those mall. It ain't sitting around taking pictures and doing a whole photo shoot.
SPEAKER_08We did a whole photo shoot in the mall. I can't wait. We're doing it again, Ryan. I think I'm gonna come by Thursday. I'm glad I gotta work the whole day. So that probably spent my whole day at the mall doing a photo shoot. So tell me, I'm just gonna come ready. Anyway, Monique, why don't we bring on our next guest?

SPEAKER_11I'm retired. Yeah. I'm retired. I'm saved. I'm saved and full of the holy water right now.
Monique RobinsonOh Jesus. That's scary.
SPEAKER_08What what what brand of grandmoney? I'm quite sure it was blessed before you even put your lips on it.
SPEAKER_11Hey, but hey, hey, I just want to say I'm honored to be part of Help Brothers Come Up. Hey, it's gonna be a great time. Hey, it's gonna be a great time. We're gonna be a great show. We're gonna have some fun. We're gonna do some great things. Can't wait till you come to the store tomorrow. You come to the store tomorrow.
SPEAKER_08I need you to make sure you have on the right colors and don't be putting on somebody else's.
SPEAKER_11Hey, you need to get there tomorrow. Because I had somebody I had somebody looking at their suit today. Hey, and you know my wife. Hey, you know my wife.
SPEAKER_08I'll be there Thursday. I'll be there Thursday.
SPEAKER_11Hey, you know my wife. When somebody says they're gonna pay $750 for something, she's gonna sell it.
SPEAKER_08Oh, I wasn't paying that much.
SPEAKER_11Oh, I wasn't charging you $7.50, but that's what the price is on it. That's what she was gonna pay.
SPEAKER_08Oh my goodness. So she probably leave myself alone.
SPEAKER_11She'll sell it in a heartbeat.
SPEAKER_08So, Rod, listen, we were telling Dev earlier about the store and how we came in and did a whole photo, uh whole photo shoot in the mall. But let everybody know where you're located. Store, hours, all that kind of great stuff.
SPEAKER_11So Anthony is my Anthony is my premier model. Um he came into when we was at the road, when we was at the uh Eisenhower flea market, hey, he just wanted to just glow. He wanted to put on clothes, he liked to twist and turn and get his, he liked to he like to get his picture taken. He should have been a criminal because he could have got his picture taken a whole lot if he just kept getting arrested. But other than that, hey, he's a wonderful model. So every time he comes to San Antonio, we put him in some clothes and we taking pictures, and we having, man, we having hella fun. We're gonna do a little dancing and all that stuff. And the thing about it was he was telling y'all about he had on an outfit. So he had this outfit on, and the man said, I want that outfit right there. So as soon as he took it off, I passed the outfit to my wife, and my wife sold it to the man. So then Anthony came to the register trying to ring y'all, and he said, What my other outfit is? And I was like, What other outfit? The one I had on first. I said, Oh, my wife sold it.
SPEAKER_08Off my back, ladies and gentlemen. She sold the outfit right off my back.
SPEAKER_10Hey, Anthony took that. Hey, Anthony took that outfit off and it went straight to the register. That was bad. I was there. That was pretty bad. Hey, I said, wait, why would you do that? That was and she said, Well, I ain't know he didn't say he was buying it.
Monique RobinsonThat was mystical.
SPEAKER_11If it took me forever to take it off, I said, I said, eight out of ten things that Anthony put on, he's gonna buy.
